This is a detail from the very first commercial published piece to advertise travel to the Hawaiian Islands. It is from a brochure printed by the Oceanic Steamship Company, used from 1887 into the early 1890s.
Oceanic’s ships traveled from San Francisco through the Pacific all the way to Australia. In the late 1920s, Oceanic was purchased by the Matson Navigation Co., which took over these routes.
