World War II Comic Postcard • ca. 1942
A sailor and a hula girl surf towards Waikiki Beach on a cheaply-produced Hawaii postcard from early in World War II. Behind the couple is the puzzled periscope of a Japanese submarine.
lthough treated lightly here, Japanese submarines really were sinking ships around and near the Hawaiian Islands in Dec. 1941 and early 1942. The cynical expression “Oh, yeah?” probably refers to how unlikely it would be for a sailor to have a hula girl all to himself, on a surfboard or anywhere else in Hawaii at that time.
