Record label for “Hawaii” by Jan & Dean • 1967
Although both Gene Pitney and the Beach Boys recorded different songs called “Hawaii” in the 1960s, this is yet another tune of the same name. Jan & Dean’s first record was released in 1959, but their surf-themed hits of 1963 and ’64 are what they are justifiably famous for.
The duo’s career was never the same after Jan Berry was badly and permanently injured in a car crash in April 1966, which put him in a coma for two months. He returned to the studio one year later to work on “Hawaii” and a few other songs, although he no longer could sing.
The label credits him and his girlfriend of the time, Jill Gibson, as the writers; they had broken up just before Jan’s injuries. Jan gradually returned to performing with Dean Torrance starting in the 1970s despite physical and mental impairments. He passed away in 2004.
