“Surf USA / Hawaii” license plat • 1960s
Some American States only require vehicles to have a single license plate on the back, with nothing needed on the front. This allows other items, like this souvenir license plate, to be attached there.
It obviously was manufactured professionally by a factory which made real license plates, and also shows evidence that it was actually used on a car.
Probably other similar plates were also made with a different location name at the bottom, most likely California and maybe Florida.
The phrase “Surf USA” was likely suggested by the hit Beach Boys song, “Surfin’ USA”. Ironically, since Hawaii mandates the use of two license plates, this one couldn’t have been used there.
