1953 | United Air Lines calendar

United Air Lines received permission from the US government’s Federal Aviation Administration to expand its routes to Hawaii in 1947.

This meant that illustrations of Hawaiian scenes immediately began appearing in the airline’s annual promotional calendars, which in this period used the work of one individual commercial artist each year.

Although this picture of a mature surfer hefting his board towards the Waikiki surf is dated December 1952, this is actually the first page of the 1953 calendar which was distributed in the last month of the previous year.

There’s one other Hawaii view included too, of the coastline near Hana, Maui.
