Night Hawk Always Gets His Cocoanuts • 1931
Why is a picture of a dog appearing in the Surf Blurb? Because this is Night Hawk the Surfing Dog, in a publicity photo distributed to newspapers and magazines in March 1931.
Night Hawk surfed at Waikiki with his owner, beachboy Philip Auna Jr., and appeared not only in photographs but in at least one movie as well, titled “On The Waves At Waikiki”, made between 1927 and 1930.
You can see this short travelogue on YouTube. This picture is one of several of Night Hawk shot at the same time, which purported to show how he could climb coconut trees to pull off nuts. In addition to this famous mutt, another Waikiki surfer was Sandy, in the 1950s. Other surfing animals include pigs and even cats, but dogs are probably the most skilled and enthusiastic.
