1920 | City of Honolulu

Territory of Hawaii, map cover

This thick paper cover originally had a street map of Honolulu glued inside, which could be unfolded.

Maps like this were not commonly printed or used very much until cars came into more common use in the USA, which got people around a lot more and a lot faster, and they needed to know where they were going.

As this cover says, Hawaii was a territory of the United States at this time and did not become a state until 1959.

The image of a surfer on the foamy wave shows that surfing was strongly associated with Hawaii then, and nowhere else in the world yet.
