This small rectangular cardboard box usually lies flat, as seen here, but can be held open. (The line of one of the folds is visible below the wording “Aloha From Hawaii”).
In this position, you can look through the round plastic lens (which shows the words “Hold Viewer To Light” when it’s flat) to see an enlarged view of a 35mm color transparency of surfers on the other side of the box.
There had been postcards of a similar construction fifty or so years earlier, except for those you just held up the card to a light to see a faint image through a white paper window.
As with most older color transparencies, especially the cheaper ones, this surfing picture has faded to a uniform magenta color, while the printed cardboard fortunately has remained in good condition.
