Back and front cover of a Graystone Corporation car rental leaflet • c. 1928
Although the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and surfers are the subjects of this illustration, they have nothing to do with what this leaflet is advertising. It’s for “Drive-Yourself Cars” rented from the Graystone Corporation in Honolulu.
Renting a car was still a new concept in the 1920s, unlike today, and this was partly because at the time it was inexpensive to engage a taxi (or a chauffeured car) for sightseeing trips. Although this piece is not dated, it was printed not long after the Royal Hawaiian Hotel opened in February 1927.
The artist, Martin R. Aden, was a cartoonist and commercial illustrator who worked in Honolulu in the 1920s.
