How to Surf For the Beginner” by L. A. Webber, 1964
Published by South Sea Scotty, a Honolulu printer in business since the early 1940s, “How to Surf” tells you how to participate in the newest popular sport for the low price of only 50 cents.
While it undoubtedly couldn’t take the place of actual experience, this booklet does contain a lot of helpful information in a clear style that’s easy to read.
For example, how else would you know not to use suntan lotion before you surf? “If you do, it will be impossible to stay on your board when you stand and extremely difficult to even lie on it and paddle.” The solution is to “build up a good tan” – not the advice we’d think of today.
