Cover of the “Waikiki Surf Battle” LP record • 1963
No actual surfing was associated with the Waikiki Surf Battle, which was a “battle of the bands” held on Sept. 14, 1963.
The surfing title is because the groups were playing surf music; the event did take place in Waikiki, though, in the Waikiki Shell outdoor concert venue.
The liner notes say that the audience of 10,000 was the largest ever there. With 18 Oahu high school bands performing, the whole event had to be released on two separate records, of which this is Volume 2.
