Hawaii by a different route! • 1923
Los Angeles Steamship Company ad, 1923. The “different route” mentioned in this headline was from Los Angeles to Hawaii instead of from San Francisco.
In the ‘20s, Los Angeles grew tremendously, eventually surpassing San Francisco as the most populous city in California. In line with this growth, the Los Angeles Steamship Co. in 1922 went into competition with the Matson Navigation Co. in San Francisco by serving Hawaii. Matson bought out their competitor in 1930.
The artwork at the bottom of this ad shows one of the company’s steamships on the left – very little, in the distance – while canoe surfers cavort close by.
