Territory of Hawaii auto registration tag • 1921
This is an extremely rare brass tag issued by the Territory of Hawaii (here abbreviated as “T.H.”) as proof that a private car was registered.
Small metal tags like this one were issued for this purpose from 1912 through this year, 1921. The last three were particularly interesting: 1919 was a fish, 1920 was an automobile, and 1921 was this surfer with outstretched arms on a stylized breaking wave.
This was the last year that the Territorial government handled this task; the following year, each of Hawaii’s four counties took over vehicle registrations, which they still do today. That shift stopped any more wonderful items like this from being made.
